ADJUNCT PROFESSOR FOR ECOLOGICAL ECONOMICS
GREEN MBA PROGRAM
DOMINICAN UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA
SAN RAFAEL, CALIFORNIA
FALL SEMESTER 2008

We are seeking an instructor to teach a course in Ecological Economics starting Fall Semester, 2008, in the Green MBA program at Dominican University in San Rafael, California. This instructor will also teach a 1.5 unit preparatory course called Economics for Managers.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The neoclassical economics paradigm is devoted to the goal of allocative efficiency. The emerging field of ecological economics offers an alternative approach, one that pursues the goals of ecological sustainability and social justice before that of allocative efficiency. Practitioners of this field acknowledge the importance of efficiency as a societal norm, but only after measures are taken to guarantee that human activities do not threaten the viability of life on our planet and that all people can secure the means for leading healthy lives.

Ecological economics represents a transdisciplinary attempt to bridge the social sciences, primarily economics, with the natural sciences, primarily ecology. In this course students explore how people, acting through the private, public, and nonprofit sectors, can affect change in their communities using a “triple-bottom-line” approach – sustainable scale, just distribution and efficient allocation.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

There are four course objectives:

  1. Understand and evaluate the insights, concepts and tools developed by ecological economists.
  2. Apply these insights, concepts and tools in the realm of sustainable business as well as policy design, beginning at the microeconomic level (firms and consumers) and finishing at the macroeconomic level (the whole economy).
  3. Integrate the concept of sustainability into each student’s business plan, drawing from this field as well as other eco-commerce models (e.g. The Natural Step, Natural Capitalism, Cradle-to-Cradle Design, the Global Reporting Initiative, etc.).
  4. Learn the most useful, relevant tools of managerial and environmental economics, focusing on their application in the realm of green business.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ph.D. or Ph.D candidate in economics or related field, preferably in natural resource, environmental or ecological economics
  • Experience in ecological economics and related fields
  • Concern about environmental and social issues
  • Openness to teaching methods that create a collaborative classroom environment encouraging student involvement
  • Willingness to collaborate with other faculty in integrating various courses into a cohesive, integrated program
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Teaching experience in a collaborative environment
  • Business or consulting experience, including work with small and medium-sized businesses or non-profit organizations

This 3-unit course will meet primarily on weekends, with some Friday classes. Course includes 36 classroom hours per semester. Attendance at one faculty meeting per month on a Friday is also expected. Compensation: $4875/semester.

The 1.5 unit Economics for Managers course includes 18 classroom hours per semester and pays $2438. Both courses are taught three times per year.

The Green MBA is a rigorous, full-time, MBA curriculum that fully integrates environmental and social responsibility into a hands-on, project-oriented training program for individuals that are passionate about advancing environmental and social initiatives through business.
